How many gold colors are there?

erossjewelry: I do make my own colored gold alloys - reds, yellows, greens. I buy the white gold alloys. I feel like an alchemist when I'm melting the metals together. And it's totally awesome to manipulate the colors. There are other colors out there - purples, browns, blue, but they don't have the same working properties, so I don't make them. I hope this answers your questions.

metalsmithing term in which a metal cylinder is forged around a domed
stake to create a bulbous shape with tapered ends. To this ring I
applied a circular, heavy-sandpaper finish for a more organic surface.

RichmondArt: I'm a dental student so I've had some classes on dental anatomy. I saw a similar ring once in metal, but I think I like the natural look better. The process starts with a copper strip I make from sheet copper. I bend it around a wooden mandrel for size and shaping and then tape it with copper soldering tape. I run pink polymer clay through a pasta machine to get a thin piece to cover the copper. I make sockets in the pink clay and place white teeth inside. After contouring the gums and evening everything out, I bake the rings in the oven and then coat them with varnish.

Let's see if I can come up with some original text (hehe):
I like to make rings that are organic, slightly imperfect and "well worn" in nature. Rough, textured and oxidized precious metal paired with shiny stones or shell makes me think of buried treasure - and who doesn't like buried treasure! I'm facinated by ancient cultures (the greeks, for one) who made elaborate jewelry pieces with not much more than a fire pit - and I challenge myself by working with very basic (and few) tools. Being able to wear a piece every day (with whatever outfit) is also important to me, so I tend to gravitate towards the simple and meaningful.

The “9 millimeter”.

I have named this ring the “9 millimeter” due to the size of stone it holds. The design is an original by my wife and business partner Chantay. She likes the idea of a simpler innocent look on a contemporary design. Which has an irony of the name “9 millimeter” like a smoking gun, it blows you away.

Ring description: 9mm color change from blue to purple Spinel from Sri Lanka, flush set in satin finish Deoxy silver. The surrounding light affects color changing stones. Indoors this stone is purple and in sunlight it shifts to a cobalt blue.

How do you create this satin finish on your rings?

The finish on the 9mm ring is made with a strip of sandpaper wrapped around a bit that fits in my flexible shaft Foredom power tool. Then at a low speed I apply the rotating sandpaper to the ring all in the same direction to achieve this delicate finish.

When I made Isis she had no name. Originally she was designed as a mothers ring for a customer but that did not work out and she came back to me. So I decided to keep her. The inspiration for Isis was only that she was to be a mothers ring. This is the reason for the choice of stones. Roma Rings: The Roma rings are an exploration with wax. They were either my second or third time working with wax. I learned a new technique from Kate Wolf she teaches in Maine. She is an excellent teacher. Anyway I wanted to make a ring for everyday wear.

When I wear jewelry I tend to wear the piece to excess. So I wanted to make something that felt good as well as being able to take the abuse it would have to take because I tend not to take them off even when I am doing metal work. So this is what came out of that.
The biggest part of doing this work is that it is play time for me. I get to make a living doing what I love! Everyone should follow there dreams because they do come true. They may not look like what you think they will look like in the beginning but I truly believe that we are here to follow that driving passion in our hearts.

SilverAndSteel: "I love to work with contrasting colored materials, e.g. Mokume Gane, Damascus Steel, all sorts of combinations with silver, yellow/white/red gold, steel, copper, brass. Often I just start preparing a new piece of Mokume or Damascus Steel - during my work with it I find out if it is going to be a ring, a pendant or something other.

The Hakapella Ring II is made of Damascus Steel and Sterling Silver (.925). Please note that the Damascus part of the ring is not centered on the finger where the ring is worn but rests in the middle above two fingers. I wanted to give the band a more organic look so I hammer textured and polished it up, producing a nice sparkle. The damascus steel itself is not made by me. I do not own a forge so am not capable to make Damascus Steel pieces. The Damascus Steel seen in my Jewelry is produced by the company Damasteel (see http://www.damasteel.com/). I love the textures they provide. Compared to silver and gold this material is very hard to work with. But I think the result justifies the effort ;-)

My Inlay Ring is made from scratch by myself. I alloyed the sterling silver for the band and the 18k yellow gold myself. I love the rich colour of 18k gold in contrast to silver. So I prepared those many small pieces of gold and soldered them to the silver band. While rolling them down into the surface of the band the texture of this ring was produced. Afterwards, the ring was soldered closed and finished."

"This ring is all hand carved in the shape of leaves and has a different look from all different angles. My collection tries to convey an artistic and poetic vision based on swallows and their flight in relation to us. "Rolling rings are generally seen in variations of 3 to 6 bands all linked together. These were historically known as a posey ring or Russian Wedding Band. Cartier made the three tone rolling bands as a limited edition starting a fashion craze in 1924 and has endured since.

The Nest Ring is my original variation on this theme. I am an avid jewelry aficionado and I had always dreamed of having a rolling ring with more than six links. In all the years before becoming a jeweler, I searched high and low for such a ring, but could not find it. I then devised the Nest Ring to have 12 links and my signature carved swallows. It was the perfect marriage of an old symbol with a fresh, entirely new twist. Each swallow is hand carved, so no two are exactly alike. It makes a perfect ring for an alternative wedding, anniversary, or a special gift to yourself. Each ring is pulled and formed to exact measurements and hand fabricated. Coyol is a palm tree seed. When it falls from the tree it has a dusty brown color, but underneath the wood is a rich black. It is a very durable material that polishes smooth and withstands moisture and wear and tear tremendously. Marlon began experimenting with the coyol seed in Nicaragua, where it's also used to make a fermented drink called "chicha de coyol." All of the materials we use are collected by hand in Nicaragua, from the forest floor in small quantities.

here is a blurb on enameling

vitreous lead free enamel, kiln fired on sterling silver.

Enamel is a ground glass, and melts in a kiln at 1400 - 1500 degrees F. the enamels I use are both opaque, and transparent, combined often for interesting layered effects. each piece is unique due to the fluidity of the medium, and will never have another exactly like it.

remember, you ring will be silver, fused with glass on top. IT IS NOT INDESTRUCTIBLE, please treat it kindly. it's not really fragile, but be nice with it. if you smash it hard against something, it is likely to crack, or chip."

The stones will never fall off?

The tensions sets work great in titanium because of the stong and springy properties of the metal. The ring is made undersized and spread open to insert the stone, and the ring wants to spring back to the original position, so has a lot of preload to hold the stone in place. There are grooves in the sidewalls that actually locate and hold the stone. The settings are very secure. You can pull on the prongs with all your might and never get anything to move. The setting allows a lot of extra light to go through the stone. I can work with a customer's stone, so when they send one in an old setting, most customers can't believe the difference in brilliance in their stone when it's put in a tension setting. It looks like a much more expensive stone. I make each tension set for a specific stone, and most settings could be made to work with different shaped stones. Diamonds in a quality of SI1 or better or sapphires work best in tension settings. Round is the strongest diamond shape, so they work very well in this type of setting.

Swarovski crystals?

My name is Alayna Orozco, and I live in the desert, just south of Albuquerque, New Mexico. I have been working with sterling silver wire, semi-precious stones, pearls, and Swarovski crystals (to name a few) for a little more than two years now. I work full time as a legal secretary in a law firm, while going to graduate school to become a therapist, and in my free time I love to make jewelry.

While I love a variety of materials, Swarovski crystals hold a special place in my heart. They are a relatively inexpensive way to bring lots of sparkle and shine to your neck, ears, or any other place that you have found to adorn yourself with jewelry!

Two things that make Swarovski crystals sparkling and bright are the high lead content, and what is called an "AB" finish. I couldn't tell you too much about why lead helps reflect light, but the story behind "AB" is quite interesting. The term "AB" is short for Aurora Borealis, also known as the northern lights. Much like the Aurora Borealis, this finish creates a variety of colors that not only shine, but also change and shift before your eyes. It can be mesmerizing, and that is why I especially enjoy using these crystals for rings. It really gives the wearer something pretty to look at, in between tasks, all day long.

Could you explain the idea behind the feather ring design?

The idea behind the rings is: in Egyptian mythology the spirit/soul of someone was counterbalanced with feathers.

A feather was a symbol for truth, purity, to be sinless. With a feather your mind can fly.

The feather lies over the back of the hand. So it is elegant and it recalls me of Charleston.

I like that the jewel is also an object.
